M&E Thursday Talk – Future Trends in Global Peace

On June 24th, 2021, Executive Director (Americas) of the Institute for Economics & Peace, Michael Collins, led our M&E Thursday Talk discussion on “Future Trends in Global Peace”.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) is the flagship publication of IEP and the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness. The 2021 results show that the average level of global peacefulness deteriorated for the ninth time in the last thirteen years. Even with 73 countries recording deterioration, 87 countries showed improvement and the change in the overall peacefulness score is the second smallest in the history of the index. But, what does this all mean for the future of global peace and our work?

In our discussion with Michael Collins, he unpacked key themes from the 2021 GPI and analyzes the global rise in civil unrest and political instability. We also explored current trends in militarization and terrorism, and the economic impact of violence, touching on the topics of positive peace and the tools needed to build peacefulness in our current world.
