Human rights, as conceived and developed by Western societies, have been enormously influential in law, foreign and domestic policy, commerce, art, and culture. But what is the role of human rights in the design and development of new technology? As tech becomes more powerful and influential, what are innovators’ responsibilities to the 7.5 billion humans who inhabit planet Earth? Can human rights scale?
About the Speaker:
Keith Hiatt is an internationally recognized expert in human rights, software, and data. He is Vice President of Human Rights at Benetech, and a member of the Technology Advisory Board of the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. He is also a Lecturer and Research Fellow at the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley, where he founded the Human Rights Investigation Lab. Prior to attending law school at UC Berkeley, Keith worked as a software engineer at Microsoft and a systems analyst at Boeing.
