Summary: This paper, “Rule of Law Approaches to Countering Violent Extremism,” reviews the current research on the drivers of violent extremism, describes the types of ABA ROLI programs that have the potential to counter extremism, and lays out recommendations and guidelines for the implementation and measurement of rule of law programs in this context. This topic is also the focus of ABA ROLI’s 2017 Annual Conference on Contemporary Rule of Law Issues convened May 4, 2017, in Washington D.C., in partnership with ABA Standing Committee on Law and National Security and the Georgetown University Law Center.
