Internews conducted a comparative analysis of the legal frameworks applicable to online harassment and online gender-based violence (oGBV) in five countries in East and Southern Africa.
Researched and written by Chioma Nwaodike and Nerissa Naidoo, Internews’ comparative analysis was produced in partnership with Pollicy, as part of a larger body of research, Alternate Realities, Alternate Internets, examining the experiences of African women in online spaces.
Internews’ review shows that legal frameworks are rarely fully representative of the practical realities in any country. South Africa, for example, boasts “progressive” gender-based violence laws yet maintains one of the highest gender-based violence incidence rates in the world.
